When JLL Senior Vice President Jorg Mast, a native of Germany, was asked to bring the flavors of his home country to North Texas for a special client event, he relished the opportunity.
“Jeff [Price, JLL Managing Director] attended my birthday and he said ‘this food is great,’” said Mast. “‘We should do an Oktoberfest event and you should do the cooking.’”
He laughs thinking back about it, but a few months later they did just that.
JLL recently welcomed an exclusive group for a truly authentic Oktoberfest event in Trinity Groves. The client appreciation event was for local multifamily clients.
Mast partnered with local celebrity chef Sharon Van Meter and hand-picked the menu to get everything just right. He even provided his own family recipes, which had been passed down for generations, for the event.
“It makes a difference,” he said. “It makes it more personable.”
Items included authentic Nurnberger Bratwursts, Mache Salad with Bacon and Croutons, Shrimp in Dill Sauce on Belgian Endive, and German Charcuterie of select meats, cheeses and vegetables among dozens of other made-from-scratch items. Guests also enjoyed select German beers.
“This was by far the best German food I have had in Dallas,” said Timothy Gottsacker, Silver Oak Multifamily Capital. “It was a fun night and I appreciate the invitation.”
Many guest felt the same way.
“I tried every meat, the kraut, cabbage, potatoes and a fistful of cheeses,” Norman P. Bjornnes, Jr., President, Oaks Properties LLC. “It was quite a feast.”
Though he does not consider himself an “ambassador” of German cuisine, Mast does think the way it’s presented can be improved in the US and opportunities like this JLL client event go a long way in making that happen.
“German food has evolved and I do like to show people a good time, but also like to provide a bit of an education,” he said. “German food can be really enjoyable and good, when it’s done right.”
Plans are already underway for next year’s event.
